Of Marionettes and Dragons -

an examination of internal martial arts through dance. Workshops with Raphael Scullion & Kerem Shemi.

As a method of self-cultivation the internal martial arts approach the body not only as a tool that interacts with an opponent, but as a point of exploration in itself.

Concepts like ‘the marionette’, ‘the ball in water’, ‘the tree grows roots’ serve to connect the abstract self to the physical self, and in extension to the other.

In these workshops we come together - as a dancer and a martial artist - to examine how these concepts work and how they can relate to a broader framework of movement and dance. To illustrate them we make use of single and partner exercises from the Chinese internal martial arts that lead into more open exploration through the lense of dance.
